Sandra Wallenhorst: rolled oats and coffee after a hard workout
Dewie watching your favorite food after a hard / long workouts (eg travel passes throughout the day, etc.) from?
Oatmeal. Rolled oats are definitely the main component of my diet. And a little fruit to it. Pasta is there usually a little later. After the pressure I like to drink a protein shake. With a tablespoon of it and
skimmed milk I have everything back in there, what I have left on the mountain. Otherwise, water is almost always announced. Well, I’m a caffeine junkie, coffee must be simple.
What are you trusting in the Taperphase and the carbohydrate loading before competition?
When dodder: salad, fish, cottage cheese, yogurt. Directly with carbohydrate loading before the race: rolled oats, pasta and bananas. To drink, especially water, and the memory population supportive of my drink supplier.
What’s the evening after an Ironman on the table?
Pizza, cake, ice cream, even when there is little exemplary and worth emulating. To drink, I look forward to a nice cold soft wheat beer.

Rapid test for detection of transgenic maize developed
Electrochemical method ensures fast, inexpensive end
Scientists from the University of Rostock has managed to demonstrate in a real sample corn flour less than 0.9 percent of genetically modified maize MON810 using biosensors. Thus, this important threshold for food uses are first monitored with a fast electrochemical process.
“This new rapid method we have achieved an important breakthrough,” the head of the research group said Gerd-Uwe Flechsig by the Institute for Chemistry. “The next challenge for us will be to optimize the high speed, the detection limit of the method to detect even minute amounts of genetically modified maize,” added the scientist involved in the project Maren mix.
Faster and less expensive detection
In the group of Flechsig is worked for years in the electrochemical DNA analysis. One of the objectives is to develop a practical rapid and inexpensive detection of genetically modified plants. The conventional optical methods of analysis in contrast, are expensive and slow. The research carried out in close cooperation with Inge Broer held by the Agricultural and Environmental Sciences at the University of Rostock, which is considered an expert on genetically modified plants in high esteem at home and abroad.
Developed at the University of Rostock methods and procedures for the detection of genetically modified maize to be marketed through the company Gensoric, a spin-off from the University of Rostock. (Red)
food production and biofuels
Biofuel endangered nutrition in developing countries
Bonn (epo.de). – The global food supply faces increasing competition: are intensified agro-fuels and feed for meat production mainly for export. This food is scarce and expensive. “The poor can not pay for rising prices does not have enough grain to be filled. This increases the global hunger continued despite increasing production,” said Klemens van de Sand, a board member of German Watch to the results of the first trend analysis to global food security, German Watch submitted on Friday in Bonn.
The figures show, according to German Watch, that the global area under cultivation for cereals since 1987 have decreased slightly. Higher productivity, the same but more than made up so the grain output seen rising and per capita. This increase, however, come not benefit the poor in developing countries, but the wealthy meat consumers. In the meat production are used depending on the species and feeding for each kilogram of meat up to 10 kg of grain.
“We can see that already a third of world grain production by a total of 2.25 billion tonnes is used as cattle feed. Thus it is no longer directly available for human consumption,” said van de Sand. However, the growing consumption of pork and beef in global terms – not least in the main consuming country China – currently not as strong.
Another major competitor of the human diet is growing rapidly, however: the production of biofuels has increased threefold since 2000 and claim currently about 11 percent of global grain production, so German Watch. “In order to reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels, the U.S. and the EU take to be a through subsidies, tax benefits and blending obligation in favor of so-called agro-fuels in the market. So they ignore the negative consequences for food security,” criticized van de sand. The resulting shortage will encourage the rampant speculation in futures transactions on the grain exchanges. It also increases so the price increases when weather-related crop failures, most recently in Russia and Pakistan.
“Regulated energy and financial markets must therefore be to food security to give priority over the production of ethanol and biodiesel and to halt the price gouging at the grain markets stop,” asked van de Sand.
